For the Love of Art
I used to hesitate to call myself an artist, but over time, I’ve come to see that art isn’t just about mastery, it’s about passion, storytelling and the way we bring meaning to the world around us.
My photography is deeply inspired by the Romantic era, a time when beauty was found not only in what was, but in what could be.
I’m fortunate to live in Scotland, a land where the landscapes breathe belonging. Our ancestral history isn’t just something of the past, it still lingers in the mountains, dances on the wind and lives through our future dreams and desires.
Growing up as an only child on a remote farm in Western Australia, I spent hours wandering among the paperbark trees, imagining how the Heidelberg painters might have captured the golden light and dusty greens. Nature has always been my sanctuary, a place of quiet soulfulness and wild inspiration. Now, surrounded by the majesty of Scotland, it feels only natural to make this my canvas.
Though I paint with light and a lens, my hope is the same. Through each portrait, you’ll feel a belonging. Part of the landscape.
Immersed in the art, the air, the soul of Scotland.
My vision is to create bold, emotive imagery that honours Scotland, blending art, storytelling and expressive colour to capture moments that feel timeless and alive.
Standing in these surroundings, seeing yourself in a new light, is a feeling that stays with you long after the moment has passed.
My photography brings together Scotland’s landscapes and portraiture to create something both powerful and deeply personal. Each portrait is more than just an image, it’s an experience, capturing the connection between the land and the person within it.
Scotland is not a land of grey, it is a land of colour, heart and soul.
Colour and natural light are at the forefront of everything I do. Since 2016, I’ve been capturing Scotland not just how it looks, but how it feels. I reject the washed-out, desaturated portrayals often seen in photography. To me, Scotland is vibrant, alive with warmth and strength. Inspired by the Old Masters, Australian Impressionists, and Pre-Raphaelites, I use light, shadow and atmosphere to create images that feel full of life and connected to the land.
I want to offer more than just a photograph, I want to create an experience that connects the person in front of my lens to the land, the light and the moment.
Now, with Richard by my side, we work entirely outdoors for our portrait sessions, keeping things simple and in harmony with the landscape. Our approach is intentional, carrying only what we need, using natural light to bring authenticity and depth that studio lighting simply can’t replicate.
Whether you long to step into a world of timeless romance, celebrate your own story in Scotland’s landscapes, or simply see yourself in a new light, we would love to create something unforgettable with you.
Work with The Auld Romantics
We are primarily focussed on our portrait photography clients and projects that resonate with The Auld Romantics’ ethos. We are also open to creative and/or commercially-minded work that celebrates the beauty, history and spirit of the Scottish landscape and the human connection with nature. With our commitment to natural light, outdoor settings and Scotland’s ‘right to roam’ code, we strive to capture images that are as visually impactful as they are meaningful.
