Since 2016, The Auld Romantics has been dedicated to capturing the beauty of Scotland through photography.

What began as a journey into portraiture photographing individuals and couples against the breathtaking backdrop of the Highlands has grown into a deeper exploration of the landscape and history that makes Scotland so magical. Our work blends the timeless essence of the old masters with the soft touch of the Australian Impressionists and Pre-Raphaelites of the 19th century, drawing inspiration from their mastery of light, shadow and emotion.

We’ve always been inspired by the romance of the Victorian era, where art and emotion were intertwined.

The soft, ethereal quality that defined the period is something we strive to evoke in every photograph, aiming to connect the viewer not only with the subject but also with the spirit of the landscape. There’s a unique magic to the Scottish Highlands, the rolling hills, rugged coastlines and mist-shrouded mountains that holds a story of its own. Through our lens, we aim to tell that story in a way that feels timeless and filled with colour and emotion.

Natural light is at the heart of our photography.

Our equipment bag is kept light, containing only cameras and reflectors—our essential tools. We work entirely outdoors, using natural light or, on occasion, soft window light. There’s something profoundly beautiful about working in harmony with nature, letting the changing light of day shape each shot. From the golden warmth of sunrise to the gentle, misty glow of an afternoon, natural light infuses each image with a richness and authenticity that studio lighting simply can’t replicate. This is why we’re drawn to the outdoors, where nature and our subjects, whether people or landscapes, blend to create something truly magical. And, of course, Scotland helps!
